Protest Mugs (short & tall)
Protest mugs are all made with angry fingers, rainbow glazes and liberal tears. Sometimes the art is angry and pissed off, sometimes it’s funny, and sometimes it’s uplifting (but only for the people I wanna uplift). This is not my usual body of work, but this is what my heart needs to create. Protest art is crucial during political turmoil because it raises awareness, sparks conversations and provides a way to peacefully resist injustices. I do this to connect with more people while we fight for change.
If you have a specific phrase you’d like, go to my pre-order product option and purchase a “custom mug.”
There are 2 sizes: short (8 oz) or tall (12 oz) below.
CHOOSE mug below.
“Sgraffito” is an artistic technique in which a layer of color (usually slip or underglaze) is added on top of the clay while it is still leather-hard. Then the top layer is scratched or carved away to show the clay underneath and to reveal a pattern or design. Once the piece has dried, it is fired in a kiln. A glossy glaze is added and the piece is fired again to a higher temperature.
If you look closely, you can see where all the clay was carved away. It’s a long process! Each piece is carved by hand without patterns - these are all my own freeform drawings. Each piece is completely unique and one of a kind. So, even if you see a few mugs with similar drawings, no two are the same.
It is a piece of art.
*All of my work is handmade using slabs, pinching or coiling methods so you may see how my hands manipulated the clay with their perfect imperfections. They can be put in the microwave or the dishwasher, but as with any handmade item, they will last much longer with handwashing and gentle care.
Each piece varies.
